What Is Cell Phone Screen Polishing?
Cell phone screen polishing removes scratches from the front glass of a phone by taking a very thin layer of material off the glass surface. It takes out light and deep scratches, but it cannot repair cracks, chips through the glass, or faults in the display underneath.
What screen polishing is
Screen polishing is a surface process for the front glass of a phone or a watch. The scratch sits in the top of the glass, so the polish works the surface down evenly until the scratch is gone.
The original display stays on the device. Nothing is swapped, opened up or replaced. Some buyers call it screen buffing or a buff and polish; it is the same process.
For a business, polishing is usually done by the lot. A wholesaler, refurbisher or trade-in company ships scratched devices to a polishing provider and gets them back with the scratches out. Mobility Traders LLC runs this as a B2B service from Houston, Texas, for businesses across the United States: you ship the devices in, they are polished, and they ship back to you. You can read how that works on our wholesale cell phone polishing page.
What polishing removes
- Light scratches — hairline marks and fine scuffs from pockets, bags and keys.
- Clusters of small scratches — the haze that shows up when a screen is tilted toward the light.
- Deep scratches — marks you can catch with a fingernail. Deep scratch removal is part of the service, not an extra.
Done properly, polishing leaves the screen normal. There are no waves and no distortion when you look across the glass at an angle. A screen protector can still be applied afterwards.
What polishing cannot fix
Polishing works on the surface of the glass. It removes material; it cannot add any back. That sets clear limits:
- Cracks. A crack runs through the glass. Polishing does not repair cracks.
- Chips through the glass. A chip that breaks through the glass is damage, not a surface mark.
- Display faults. Dead pixels, burn-in and lines live in the LCD or OLED panel under the glass. Polishing the glass does not change them.
Cracked front glass needs a different service: front glass replacement, often called re-glass. Our guide on polishing vs replacing phone glass explains how to decide which one each device needs.
Why it is different from at-home buffing
Hand-buffing kits, polishing pastes and household tricks such as toothpaste are often shared as quick scratch fixes. On a single phone they may soften a light mark. On anything more, they tend to cause problems.
- Uneven results. Rubbing by hand takes more off some spots than others, which leaves waves you can see when light moves across the screen.
- Deep scratches stay. Most home methods only dull light marks; a deep scratch is still there afterwards.
- No consistency across a lot. A reseller needs every device in a lot to look alike, not to vary with whoever did the rubbing.
Professional screen polishing uses a controlled method so the surface stays even across the whole screen and from one device to the next.
Which devices can be polished
Screen polishing applies to glass screens. At Mobility Traders, that covers:
- iPhone — every model, including the iPhone 17 Series. See iPhone screen polishing.
- Samsung Galaxy — every model. On Galaxy Fold devices, the outer glass screen only; the inner folding screen is not part of the service. See Samsung screen polishing.
- Google Pixel — every model. On Pixel Fold devices, the outer glass screen only. See Google Pixel screen polishing.
- Apple Watch — every aluminum model and every Apple Watch SE. Models with sapphire crystal are not polished. See Apple Watch screen polishing.
What a business gets back
Before any work starts, every device is graded against the service you ordered. A device that will not pass is not processed and not charged.
Devices that go through polishing come back with:
- The scratches out and the original display still on the device.
- A PhoneCheck test on every serviced device.
- A double quality check against the standard for that service.
- A per-device manifest, so your records match ours device for device.
Mobility Traders has 500,000+ devices polished over 5+ years in the industry. The minimum is 50 devices per service, a sample order of 10 devices is free, and the turnaround is 7 days on average, with rush available on request. It is ship-in only: there is no drop-off and no pickup. Terms and next steps are on our B2B polishing service page.
Questions
Can polishing remove a chip in the glass?
No. A chip that breaks through the glass is damage to the glass, not a surface scratch. Polishing removes scratches; a chipped or cracked front glass needs front glass replacement instead.
Why not use an at-home buffing kit on a large lot?
Hand methods remove glass unevenly, which can leave visible waves, and they rarely take out deep scratches. Across a lot, the results also differ from one device to the next, which makes the devices harder to sell as a consistent group.
What comes back with a polished lot?
Your devices, with the scratches out and the original display still on each one. Every serviced device is PhoneCheck tested and double quality-checked, and the lot ships back with a manifest of everything done to each device.
